Steep Roofs Are No Challenge For The KRS Of WNY Installation Crews

How our KRS installation crews work safely on steep roofs.

When was the last time that you thought about the slope of the roof on your home? When there was snow and ice that you were worried about falling off of it? We think about the slopes on your roof constantly because we work with the different angles that make up roofs daily.

This roof that we recently worked on in Buffalo, NY is a fantastic example of how one home can have mulitple slopes on the same roof. Shown here with the old shingles that we needed to take off before we installed the new ones, this roof looks tired and discolored. Over time the sun will naturally fade the shingles and shadows caused by trees or areas like the dormer window can cause the roof to fade unevenly. There could also be problems with ice forming by the dormer window if the roof isn't installed properly.

Our KRS Crews work methodicly to strip the old shingles from the roof before applying a new roof to your home. We do not apply a roof over an existing roof. And the crews are experts at working around areas like the satellite dish that is currently attached to the roof. The team will teather themselves to achor points to keep themselves safe on a steep pitch like this roof has.

We hope to be able to replace the roof on your home for you, call us today to speak with us about your asphalt shingle roofing needs. Call us at [[phone]] so we can put a Klaus on Your House!

Six Quick Tips For Your Roof This Spring

Spring has (finally!) come to Western New York, and it’s a great time to spend time outside again. It’s a great time to start getting your home ready for the warmer weather to come, and we want to give you some tips on how to give your roof some special attention before summer! We are also posting about this on our Facebook page, check it out:

- Clear Debris From Your Roof – Snow isn’t the only thing that the winds can push onto your roof in winter. Old leaves, pinecones, and trash can make their way onto your roof and damage it over time, so it’s a great time to remove them.

- Remove Any Nests – Birds are amazing and beautiful, but they also carry insects and other pests that can roost in your roof with them. Nests can clog your gutters, and bird droppings can damage your roof. Contact your local wildlife expert for help removing any birds’ nests.

And while you’re taking those off, check for wasps’ nests, or other insect habitats in your roof. It’s better to remove them now when they are small before they become a big problem.

- Trim Overhanging Tree Limbs – We said this in fall, and we will say it again: tree branches can damage your shingles, and if they are large can break off and damage your roof. Remove tree branches that are growing over your roof, and avoid issues later.

- Check for Moss And Remove It – Moss growing on your roof is often a sign that your shingles are damaged or that there is water pooling in that area and letting it grow. Removing it will help prevent leaks, and contact KRS of WNY to have broken, missing, or damaged shingles replaced.

- Check For Missing Shingles – The winter storms and high winds that we have had in the last few months have lead to a lot of roofs being damaged and shingles falling off. Before these missing or damaged pieces become a problem or cause leaks, call us at KRS of WNY and let us help you replace them safely.

- Clean And Check Your Gutters – Did you clean your gutters last fall? If not then now is a great time to do so! And check them for any of the debris mentioned above; which could also be in them as well as on the roof. This will help prevent water back-ups and leaks later in the season.

Helping Your Family When A New Roof Is Installed

Tips to help your family when you are having a roof replaced on your home.

Having a new roof installed is a fantastic investment in your home, but if can interrupt family life. We want to help you prepare your family for this so the installation goes as smoothly as possible.

Roofing work starts early in the morning, and goes throughout the day. This can interrupt sleep/nap schedules for babies, children, and teens. Consider what will be best for your family and possibly relocate small children to a friend/family member's home so they can nap in peace.

Roofing work makes a lot of loud noises, and can easily disturb pets. Consider a puppy-play-date, or a day of grooming or at a dog park for your dog. Cats, bunnies, and other animals have sensitive ears too and should be accomodated appropriately.

We strive to keep roofing work as safe as possible but debris can still fall from the roof. Plan for play time inside during the time that your roof is done; and if that isn't possible plan for a safe outing to a park to play in.

With so many people working from home, you need to remember that your work could also be interrupted with noises. Taking a day off, talking with the crew about when they will be taking breaks and setting up important calls/meetings then, or relocating to a different location for the time that roofing work is being done on your home are best so your time isn't interrupted.

Please, move fragile items to a safe space. Family life can be disturbed by items falling and breaking; so make sure that any special items that could be damaged if they are accidently jostled by hammering.

Take Time In Fall To Get Your Roof Winter Ready

Fall Tips For Roofs

Your roof isn't only the top of your home, it is also one of your best defenses from winter weather. But are you doing what you should to help get your roof ready for winter? Here are some things that you should do in the fall to keep your roof in top shape.

Clear Leaves From Roof Crevices. : Clearing leaves from crevices and areas where the roof joins is very important if they do not blow away on their own. Leaves piled up can collect water and cause leaks from the weight of the water collected.

Clean Your Gutters : Dirty gutters or gutters full of debris can cause water to backup, and over winter this water back up can cause ice damage. Cluttered gutters can also be nesting places for small animals like mice.

Remove Overhanging Branches : Branches hanging over your roof not only drop leaves immediatly onto your roof, they can also potentially cause damage from branches falling on or scratching shingles. And if your tree normally gets ice on it, the the branch could freeze onto your roof and cause serious damage to the structural integrity of the shingles.

Do A Visual Inspection Of Your Roof : Are your shingles seriously discolored, look ripped, missing, or out of place? These could lead to leaks and should be addressed right away. Is your roof sagging? This could be a structural issue and should be addressed. Is your roof just looking faded and old? It might be time for a roof replacement, though it might be able to wait until spring. Set up a free estimate with us to find out if it can wait a little.

Check The Insulation I Your Attic : Yes, that's not exactly the roof, but it can tell you a lot about what is going on with your roof. Ripped insulation might indicate that an animal has gotten into your attic and could have torn part of your roof. Wet or moldy insulation? It might indicate a leak in the roof that you can't see; and moisture can damage or rot your roof supports. Take care of this right away to prevent bigger problems.

Replace Your Roof, Don't Just Repair

Roof replacements are a major home investment, so why replace instead of repair? There are times when a repair can be a good thing, but unless your roof is less than 5 years old a repair will only put a patch on what could be a bigger problem. The older your roof is the more likely it is to have more than one problem; even if you don't see it automatically just by looking at the roof.

If your shingles are broken, torn apart, coming off, buckling, cracked, or missing then your roof probably needs to be replaced instead of just repaired. If your shingles have changed color or are missing then your roof probably needs replacing.

A good rule of thumb is that your roof should be replaced about every 20 years, as at about 20 years the asphalt shingles (which are on most WNY roofs) will start to break down naturally. With ice and snow weighing on your roof, as we often have in our Western New York Winters, the shingles can age more quickly from weather damage. Any leftover water from snow and ice that is stagnant on your roof can be dried up by the sun and cause damage to the area that the water was pooling in. As the sun keeps hitting that spot, over time it can weaken the roof. Then, the weight of future rain hitting that area can cause breakage, holes, and leaks. Replacing a damaged roof before the snow falls is always a good idea.

A roof replacement can also boost your curb appeal in a way that a repair can't. Think about the roofs in your neighborhood. Which ones stand out to you, or are they all homogeneous? A new roof can make your home stand out in a beautiful way and though repairs can look seemless to the other shingles they don't give your whole roof a fresh and clean look.

Roof replacements can be more affordable than you would think, especially with our financing options. Please reach out to us to find out how we can help you put a Klaus Roof on Your House.
